Dessins au Tampon
Gianpaolo Pagni

What is a form, fundamentally, if not a motif yearning to break free from the tyranny of the background by delighting in the oscillation between difference and repetition? Whether it adopts a rigid or supple appearance, takes the form of a square or a circle, the form has but one desire: to belie its apparent fixity by indulging in a secret dynamic. Gianpaolo Pagni trusts forms to invent rhythms through manipulation. In this respect, the art of the stamp is ideal: pre-existing, because it is materialized on a support, the form can become a tool, and the tool can serve all its whims. Silk and muslin had better, quite literally, watch out: the time for variations has arrived. As for the eye, if it knows how to surrender to the twists, turns, and trajectories of the motifs, it will experience an exhilarating vision, swept away in the ever-surprising dance of the one and the many. If stamping means striking, then there's no doubt: Pagni is a percussionist of forms and colors, but a non-violent one, because here the notion of impact has been replaced by that of dialogue. Or rather, of conclave. The printed form reinvents itself as an imprint, and the imprint becomes one moment among others, a possibility enamored of other possibilities. Welcome to Pagni's gallery of versatile fossils!
